Shared from College in High School Alliance. CCRC has published the first comprehensive nationwide data-informed analyses of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dual enrollment.  This data tool will allow you to look at California data, as well as data for individual institutions. It uses age in IPEDs data to estimate high school participation in college courses.

Dear members of the College in High School Alliance,

I am writing to share a new Community College Research Center analysis of community college enrollments between fall 2019 - fall 2021, using new IPEDS data. This data gives us one of the first comprehensive nationwide data-informed analyses of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dual enrollment.

CCRC finds that IPEDS data shows "the number of students under 18 enrolled in community colleges nationally grew by only 10,000 students from fall 2019 to fall 2021, a plateauing relative to the steep upward trend pre-pandemic." But despite this overall national plateau (which National Student Clearinghouse data indicates may be back on the upswing for fall 2022), "dual enrollment continued to grow in 30 states during the pandemic, with double-digit gains in 17 states."

Given declines of enrollments in adult students and recent high school graduates, CCRC's analysis finds that the share of community college enrollments made up by high school students has increased. According to them, "[i]n fall 2021, 18.3% of community college students nationally were under 18, up from 15.7% in fall 2019."

There's a lot more information, including charts and state-by-state breakdowns over at CCRC's blog post and I really recommend you check out the whole thing. Thanks to John Fink for doing this important data analysis and helping continue to deepen our understanding of the impact of COVID on dual enrollment, and where we go from here.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,

Alex Perry

It is not beyond our power to create a world in which all children have access to a good education. In my travels all over the world, I have come to realize that what distinguishes one child from another is not ability, but access. Access to education, access to opportunity, access to love. -- Nelson Mandela
