Hello All,

Thank you for joining us on February 28th for the Equitable Dual Enrollment: Applying for the New State Grants webinar. You can now access the recording, presentation, and resources shared on the CLP website. There were a couple of questions that we didn’t have time to get to but we have responded below.

Thank you,

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: How do the DE instructors who meet the min quals get into/or not get into the preferred hiring pool at the college? Are they capped as adjuncts at ~3 courses/semester?

A: Colleges may have different ways of addressing this question. Many hire the high school faculty as adjuncts, but some may not hire them and go through a different process where their qualifications are vetted. Many consider the dual enrollment courses as a part of the adjunct instructional load, which is limited. Some, however, do not unless the instructor also teaches at the college as well. It’s important to work through these topics with your college partner as there is so much variability.

Q: Does your staff have to go through the community college hiring pool?  I’ve found some challenges around having our current staff with masters teacher DE. Colleges state there is a seniority ladder and staff needs to apply to the college and they will be assigned if a higher ranking staff wants the assignment they get it.

A: Colleges may have different ways of addressing this question. Many hire the high school faculty as adjuncts which would include the seniority ladder, but some may not hire them and go through a different process where their qualifications are vetted. How course sections are assigned to instructors has to do with the faculty contact, which differs from college to college. Seniority may be an issue, and deans also have what is called “right of assignment.” It’s important to work through these topics with your college partner as there is so much variability.

Q: If your site has the teachers and the willingness to host the dual enrollment classes; but is having difficulty with the college departments not approving the high school to teach the classes, do you have suggestions for shifting the discussion?

A: As was emphasized in the webinar and the example of Arvin High School and Bakersfield College, dual enrollment partnerships rely heavily on relationships. You may consider having college and high school faculty meet and discuss course content and aspirations for students. If you are awarded a dual enrollment grant you could use your funding to pay the instructors for this meeting time. You may also consider bringing college instructors to your school site and having them meet and interact with students.

Q: I understand what you are saying about hiring people with soft money and how it's not sustainable and it’s not a lot of funds to cover expenses related to hiring human capital, but I am wondering if there are any recommendations on how you can expand pupil advising and student support services without human capital.

A: Our colleagues at the California Department of Education clarified that grant funds may be used to hire. You may also consider ongoing use of federal work-study awards and LEAP to fund college students as mentors and embedded tutors. The use of technology can also be helpful, especially early alert systems that many colleges utilize.

It is not beyond our power to create a world in which all children have access to a good education. In my travels all over the world, I have come to realize that what distinguishes one child from another is not ability, but access. Access to education, access to opportunity, access to love. -- Nelson Mandela
