This post also doubles as a recap of the very exciting Sprint #4 demonstration, which showcased what is effectively the entire feature suite for the launch NZ ORCID Hub.

That showcase was recorded and can be viewed here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B9xSYAcL09d4UmZCWHpVMFRORXc

Note this demonstration uses the Tuakiri TEST Federation and the ORCID sandbox.

For these test environments the rules are relaxed in that ORCID will provide sandbox API credentials without requiring ORCID membership, or that they go to an organisation's Technical Contact.

This exchange involves two round-trips for the user/researcher:
  1. From the Hub to Tuakiri to the user's home organisation and then back to the Hub (authenticating their affiliation).
  2. From the Hub to ORCID and then back to the Hub (authorising/allowing the write of that affiliation, and if necessary assisting their registering for an ORCID iD)
Once fully navigated, this process results in an a user with a (minimal) affiliation item written to their ORCID record with the Source being their organisation.

If the user already has an ORCID iD, and their login credentials for these systems saved by their browser, these steps can be completed with 6 clicks, i.e., the steps below:

A researcher is sent to the Hub URL

That can be by any communication's message, e.g., following a link on a website or in an email, or from a QR code on a poster...

They'll end up at the Hub's landing page,

Currently https://dev.orcidhub.org.nz

Once there, they (1) click the "Login via Tuakiri" button…

to be taken to the Tuakiri directory. Where they (2) pick their Home Organisation, and (3) click "Select" to be sent to their institution's sign-on service.

In my case that's the Tuakiri Test VHO

They enter/confirm their home credentials, (4) click "Login" and are returned to the hub…

 with their identity confirmed.

Here you can see both my organisation (Royal Society of New Zealand), and that the hub has read "staff" in the eduPersonAffiliation string returned my Tuakiri Test

VHO login to determine that I'm currently employed there (as well as my name and email).

They (5) click the button (currently named) “Give Your Organisation ORCID Access Permission” where they’re taken to ORCID.

Here the process diverges depending on whether the user has an ORCID iD or not, and, if they do have and ORCiD, whether they’re already logged into the ORCID system.

If they need to register for an ORCID record, the name and email are auto-filled by the hub, but they’ll need to reenter the email and create an account password (at the cost of a few more clicks.)

They (6) select “Authorize” and are returned to the Hub…

where there’s a interim page showing the ORCID iD...

that the affiliation has been written to.

Subsequently visiting that ORCID record reveals a new employment item with the format:

[Organisation name]: [Organisation Home City], New Zealand
to present
Source: [Organisation’s Hub APP name]
Created: [timestamp for creation]

We welcome testing, and to be involved only requires that your organisation be in the Tuakiri Test Federation, and that you (and any users/researchers involved in the test) have accounts in the organisations test environment.  If you would like to participate please let me know: jason...@royalsociety.org.nz

For the production Hub and ORCID registry, the flow is expected to be the same but will require the following pre-requisites to be satisfied:
  • your organisation is a Tuakiri Member;
  • your organisation is a member of the NZ ORCID Consortium (NB: trivially satisfied as all Tuakiri Member organisations are in the Consortium); and,
  • your organisation's Technical Contact has completed Hub onboarding by entered the organisation's ORCID API credentials (NB: this process was demonstrated in the Sprint #2 showcase)
