| Viikon hyvä uutinen: Suomen kansallispuistot ovat laajentuneet merkittävästi 2020-luvulla
Suomen kansallispuistojen pinta-alan yhteenlaskettu kasvu tällä vuosikymmenellä noin 77 neliökilometriä, joka vastaa yli 10000:ta jalkapallokenttää. Kansallispuistojen laajentamisella on luonnolle suuri merkitys, koska niihin liitetyillä alueilla ei voi esimerkiksi hakata metsää tai rakentaa.

| AALTOUusi The Philosophy of AI -kurssi
The purpose of this course is to give the students a thorough understanding of the basic principles concerning the latest Generative AI technologies, how they fit within the larger field of AI and Machine Learning and how Generative AI is similar and different from the human mind. The course also has a practical emphasis on not only understanding the technologies, but on being able to apply and use the tools in everyday life for example in problem solving and innovation.
The course is taught by Lauri Jävilehto, professor of practice at the IEM/TUTA department.

Even though this is a master’s level course official prerequisites are light, mainly need to have a basic understanding of AI. But the course should also be highly interesting to anyone with advanced technical knowledge.
Jäynän Kimble-turnaus
Ilmassa on suuren urheilujuhlan tuntua, kun Jäynän Kimble-turnaus naksahtaa käyntiin OK20 yläkerrassa 5.2. Tässä huippujännittävässä turnauksessa 16 joukkuetta ottaa mittaa toisistaan ja selviää, kenellä on loppuunsa hiotut pelistrategiat ja pettämätön kisakunto. Panokset ovat hurjat, sillä vain yksi joukkue voi viedä mukanaan vuoden toisiksi himoituimman kiertopalkinnon ja korottaa itsensä kunniagalleriaan! Kerää siis 2–4 hengen joukkueesi kasaan ja ilmoittaudu kisaamaan ennen kuin paikat loppuvat!
Liput tulevat myyntiin kide.appiin maanantaina 19.1. klo 12.00.

Laskiaisrieha ja maailman hulluin akateeminen mäenlaskukisa tulee jälleen!
Laskiaistiistaina on aika kokoontua Ullanlinnanmäelle juhlimaan perinteistä Laskiaisriehaa. Vauhdikkaan iltapäivän ajan mäki täyttyy kelkoista, pulkista, liukureista ja niitä ohjastavista opiskelijoista pääkaupunkiseudulta ja kauempaa.
Pulkkailun ja hauskanpidon lisäksi luvassa on musiikkia, kilpailuja sekä hulppeaa ohjelmaa. Päivän kruunaa legendaarinen ABB:n Akateeminen mäenlaskukilpailu, jossa joukkueet kisaavat toinen toistaan näyttävämmillä rakennelmilla akateemisen mäenlaskun mestaruudesta. Ullanlinnanmäen historiallisella laskustadionilla on nähty viime vuosina mitä mielikuvituksellisimpia laskuvälineitä ufoista tulivuoriin ja onpa mäki laskettu myös alhaalta ylöskin!

Legendaarinen Esa Saarinen pitää jälleen Aallossa Filosofia ja systeemiajattelu -kurssinsa, jolla on tänäkin vuonna kaksi kaikille avointa luentoa. Tämän kevään homma käynnistyy liveluennolla ”Digi-Esa vs todellinen Esa” keskiviikkona 28.1.2026 klo 15-18 Kandidaattikeskuksen Aalto-salissa. Päätösluento otsikolla ”Tämä ei jää tähän” pidetään keskiviikkona 25.3.2026 klo 15-18 Aalto-salissa. Oletko aina halunnut oppia näyttäviä potkuja, lyöntejä ja torjuntoja? Haluaisitko parantaa kehonhallintaa, tasapainoa ja notkeutta? Kaipaatko itsepuolustustaitoja?
Helsingin yliopiston Taekwon-Do -seuran järjestämä alkeiskurssi on avoin kaikille 18 vuotta täyttäneille. Voit kokeilla lajia ilmaiseksi 25.1.2026 asti. Kurssimaksu on 90 euroa ja se sisältää harjoitusmaksun, seuran jäsenmaksun, vyökoemaksun sekä Suomen ITF Taekwon-Do -liiton lisenssin. Jos osallistut kurssille yhdessä ystäväsi kanssa, kurssimaksu on 80 euroa kummaltakin. Aika: Sunnuntaisin kello 11.00–12.30 Paikka: Porthania Alkeiskurssi alkaa 18.2.2026 ja päättyy vyökokeeseen 24.5. Mukaan voi liittyä 15.2.2026 asti. Saat kokeilla kurssia maksutta asti 25.1.2025. The total area of Finland's national parks has grown by approximately 77 square kilometers this decade, which is equivalent to more than 10,000 soccer fields. The expansion of national parks is important for nature, as the areas included in them cannot be used for logging or construction, for example. |

Soon it’s the time of the year again for the new BIGs to be chosen! Whether you’ve been a BIG before, have dreamt about being a tutor or just want to know more about how to grow BIGger, we warmly welcome you to join in on Athene’s BIG tutor info in the hall T1 on 28th of January at 16:15-17:00.
You can expect BIG things, a thorough introduction to Athene’s tutor work and UO-sector(new student’s sector), information about how to apply to different BIG roles as well as answers for you BIG and small questions in regards of these themes <3

Jäynä's Kimble tournament
There is a sense of a major sporting festival in the air as Jäynä's Kimble tournament pops off in OK20 upstairs on February 5th In this thrilling competition, 16 teams will face off against one another to determine who has finest strategies and peak competition form. The stakes could not be higher, as only one team will claim the second most coveted trophy of the year and raise to the hall of fame! So gather your team of 2–4 players and sign up before all the spots are taken!

Laskiaisrieha and the world's craziest academic downhill race are here again!
On Shrove Tuesday, it's time to gather at Ullanlinnanmäki to celebrate the traditional Laskiaisrieha sledding festival. Throughout the lively afternoon, the hill fills with sleds, toboggans, sliders, and the students steering.
In addition to sledding, there will be music, competitions, and other entertainment. The day is crowned by the legendary ABB’s Academic Downhill Race, where teams compete with increasingly spectacular structures for the championship in academic downhill racing. In recent years, Ullanlinnanmäki's historic descent stadium has seen volcanos, UFOs, hot tubs, and even descents from bottom to top!

| OTHERSTaekwon-do's next beginner course starts on 18.1.2026!
Have you always wanted to learn flashy kicks, punches and blocks? Do you want to improve your balance, flexibility and mobility of body? Are you in need of self-defence skills? University of Helsinki Taekwon-do Club provides a beginners’ course for all adults (over 18 years). The beginners’ course starts on January 18 and ends in a belt grading test on May 24. Training sessions will be given in Porthania gym (Yliopistonkatu 3) on Sundays at 11:00-12:30. The course costs 90 €, 80 € if you participate with a friend. Fee includes training, membership and belt exam fees, and ITF Federation license fee. Until the end of January you can attend the beginners’ course for free. You can join the course even after the test period, until 15.2.2026.
