Dear Colleagues

2026 marks the 100th anniversary of mining geophysics in Canada with the discovery of the Buchans ore bodies by Hans Lundberg. This important  milestone  was however, not the start of commercial geophysics for natural resources. Before Lundberg traveled to North America in 1923, Lundberg and colleagues were carrying out a variety of geophysical surveys to aid in the discovery of ore deposits. The  most advanced such group was a German company ELBOF. A flyer they produced in 1926 has been Hightailed to  SEGMIN this morning. They had  offices around the world and provided technology to help in the discovery of minerals and petroleum. Also some materials from the late 1950s  which outlines  some of the post-WWII technology in use.

The ELBOF booklet from 1927 highlights how the gizmos have changed but the essential basics of geophysical methods have remained much the same.

That's why students must be taught the basics and not apps.  If you have the basics, you can adapt to new gizmos and apps.  If you don't, you are obsolete the minute the apps you were trained in are replaced.

And it's hard to be much of a geophysicist unless you first know geology.
