I believe it was mentioned not to use “OER” in an OER campus campaign slogan as students (and faculty) may not connect with, or know about OER. Would people mind sharing their slogans, or slogans they think students would connect with? We need one! I think hearing what other campuses are using might help kick start an idea for us, and perhaps for others too. Don't forget to attach a CC license! :) Thoughts?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi all,

I think it is really important to pair any slogan with a really strong elevator speech/mission statement that will translate well to people, because branding needs a brand to carry.

At TCC we started with the Liberate$250K campaign – which was a goal to save students $250,000 using open textbooks. Now we call the project “The Liberated” because we surpassed $250K pretty quickly. We’ve now liberated $1 million. Our “brand” has been: “Inviting faculty, students, and our college community to save students money on textbooks through adopting open education.” I communicate that any way I can, to anyone who will listen. We picked liberation as a theme because I could also say things like: “Freeing faculty from the tyranny of textbooks that don’t fit our learning objectives.” I think the key to a good brand is something that specifically defines your goal, but gives you room to message to all of your constituents. (All my stuff is CC-BY 3.0, and it will eventually be on edremix.org … but it is all at open.tacomacc.edu as well.)

I’m a big fan of the Maricopa Millions project, too. They have boiled down all of their many projects across a whole district into one basic idea: Saving students $5 million over 5 years.

After this part, my email kind of breaks down into a series of random thoughts that I’m trying to develop into a “how to” so please share your perspectives.

I do think building a strong brand is a big part of the battle when trying to build an open initiative. I’ve being thinking a lot about this and I the important thing is to marry your project goals to any messages that you want to send people and then sit down with a good thesaurus. –

Think of writing your goal like writing a really abbreviated thesis statement, and then boil that down into keywords, and then jazz the keywords up.

Hi Quill,
I agree 100%. I've been finalizing the Columbia Gorge CC OER schedule icon - deadline is fast approaching and we're getting an icon included (I'm so thrilled about that!) - and tweaking the catchphrase in the schedule. See attached. I'll have a lengthier explanation in the front of the schedule to flesh out and explain our OER campaign. Included is an attachment for our icon and our branding message (in progress, but close I hope.) I'm a big believer in non-jargon language.
Any feedback is appreciated.
John
