Greetings!

I am writing in my capacity as one of the original developers and founders of the LibQUAL service at the Association of Research Libraries.  There has been some thought given to the recent announcement ARL released regarding discontinuing the service as of December 2025.  LibQUAL was originally developed with the support of a grant from the Department of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education, awarded to ARL and Texas A&M University.  There were four co-Principal Investigators on the grant, Colleen Cook and Fred Heath from Texas A&M, and Martha Kyrillidou (myself), and Duane Webster (ARL Emeritus Executive Director) from ARL. As someone who has worked to establish this service on a worldwide basis and, currently consulting in this space since 2016, I will continue to support your LibQUAL implementation and I will offer three community wide forums to discuss pathways for transitioning your support and a sustainable future for LibQUAL. The virtual community forums will be offered in May, September, and December respectively.

Please reserve these dates in your calendar if interested in being part of the continuing discussions on how libraries can best deliver quality services in the coming decades, and utilize and evolve LibQUAL among other tools.  The dates for LibQUAL Community Forums are as follows:

Thursday, May 14 2025 @ noon to 2 PM Eastern time
Monday, September 15 2025 @ 7 AM to 9 AM Eastern time
Tuesday, December 16 2025 @ 7 AM to 9 AM Eastern time

A registration email will be sent your way next week. Please note that the reason the latter two times are scheduled so early is because LibQUAL is reaching international audiences and the proposed time zone is the most convenient for reaching all time zones across the globe. I am utilizing the eastern time zone findication because this email is coming to you from Silver Spring, Maryland, USA.

Other opportunities of meeting with consortia, state or regional, are also available.  Please email me if you want to schedule a time that works for your consortium or group of libraries.  To find out if your library has implemented LibQUAL, you can find a listing of institutions that participated here. If your institution participated but your contact details are outdated, please email lib...@arl.org and ARL colleagues will help you update your directory details and access your survey data.  If your institution participated and you do not know your LibQUAL directory information, please contact lib...@arl.org as well and they will be able to help you.

Are you going to the ACRL Conference in Minneapolis?

I will also be available at the ACRL meeting in Minneapolis if you want to meet over breakfast or on Friday evening or on Saturday this week during the ACRL conference.

I do plan to attend other forums as well in case you want to connect at any of the following conventions/meetings:
  • Maryland Library Association/Delaware Library Association Meeting in Ocean City, MD
  • Quantitative and Qualitative Measures for Libraries (QQML) (I will attend virtually)
  • International Conference on Performance Measurement in Libraries (LibPMC) in Liverpool, UK
  • American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA
  • LIBER in Geneva, Switzerland
  • IFLA in Kazakhstan (tentatively scheduled)
  • Core conference in Minneapolis (tentatively scheduled)
Kind regards, Martha

I work flexibly - so whilst it suits me to email now, I do not expect a response or action outside of your own working hours.

And one more correction -- it's Wednesday, May 14 2025 @ noon to 2 PM Eastern time for the LibQUAL Community Forum.

:)

We are holding another meeting on May 15 of a smaller group that participated in a Comparative analysis of LibQUAL data Kirsten Kinsley led among the libraries that agreed to share their data with implementations before and after Covid.  This study pending on interest will also be shared more broadly with the community at a future time/day.

Kind regards, Martha
