‘New Developments in Open Access Monographs’, co-hosted by OASPA and Knowledge Exchange, will present the latest findings on the development of OA monographs, based on three recent studies:

• ‘Landscape study on Open Access and Monographs.’ Eelco Ferwerda will talk about this in depth study initiated by Knowledge Exchange, which focussed on the conditions and potentials for Open Access books. The study, supported by FWF, CRIStin and Couperin and conducted by Eelco Ferwerda, Frances Pinter and Niels Stern, focussed on eight European countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK. It is the biggest landscape study on the conditions and potentials for Open Access books yet, based on almost 75 in-depth conversations among three stakeholder groups: Publishers, funders and libraries.
• ‘Who reads this stuff, anyway?’ Lucy Montgomery will talk about the challenges and opportunities of usage data for OA scholarly monograph publishers, based on the findings of two recent studies on the uses of OA books, carried out by Knowledge Unlatched Research: an in-depth study on the challenges and opportunities associated with the growing availability of rich usage data for small OA monograph publishers; and a new report exploring how OA books are being found and used via the JSTOR platform.
• ‘The OA effect: How does open access affect the usage of scholarly books?’ Christina Emery will present a white paper from Springer Nature, comparing usage data for OA and non-OA scholarly books. This report presents the first major comparative analysis of usage data for OA and non-OA scholarly books, and provides an informed view of how a book benefits from OA publication. It also highlights the challenges involved in measuring the impact of OA on scholarly books and suggests that there is much to do across the whole scholarly communications network in supporting authors and their funders. In the webinar, these key findings will be presented.

Knowledge Exchange’s Jeroen Sondervan will chair the event. Panelists will give short presentations, followed by a Q&A session.

Panelist biographies

Eelco Ferwerda is director of OAPEN, a foundation dedicated to OA books. He has been active in the area of Open Access for monographs since 2008, when he started managing OAPEN as EU funded project. Before that he worked as Publisher of digital publications at Amsterdam University Press. Ferwerda is member of board of directors of OASPA. He is co-founder of the Association of European University Presses (AEUP, 2010) and of the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB), which he launched with Lars Björnshauge in 2012.Ferwerda is one of the authors of the Landscape study on Monographs and Open Access, published by Knowledge Exchange in October 2017.

Lucy Montgomery is the Research Director of Knowledge Unlatched Research: an independent research and analysis group focusing on strategy and analytics that support the ecosystem of scholarly monographs. She is also the Director of the Centre for Culture and Technology at Curtin University in Australia.

Christina Emery is the marketing manager for open access books at Springer Nature. She promotes the OA book and chapter programme for two of its imprints: Palgrave Macmillan and Springer, across a wide range of subjects with science, technology, medicine, the humanities and social sciences.

Jeroen Sondervan has more than 11 years of experience as a publisher. He worked at Amsterdam University Press from 2007 to 2016 for, among other things, the media studies list. Over the past 9 years, he has gained a lot of experience in the field of open access journals and books. He currently works as an open access publishing consultant for Utrecht University. He is also a member of the Knowledge Exchange Open Access Group, the Dutch Library Consortium Open Access Working Group, and the editorial board of the National Open Access Platform – www.openaccess.nl
