Status of Link Time Optimizatioon (-flto) for ARM?

What’s the status of -flto on ARM chips? (which is not currently used for Arduino builds.)
I don’t remember any specifics on exactly why it isn’t turned on, I don’t see any “issues” attached to the relevant platforms, and there have been several releases of gcc since the SAM and SAMD cores were first made…
