Happy Friday, RIEEE Folks!
As many of you know, Appalachian State is a member of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), the university engagement arm of the National Corporation for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).  Please see the request for input below on AI/ML training needs in the ESS community.  Chris Thaxton and I are our current UCAR member representatives - please reach out to us if you would like to learn more about opportunities this UCAR membership affords.

Those of you interested in this topic might also be interested in this fall's EnviroData Collaborative Workshops - there are a few spots left!

Dear Member Reps,

A team here at UCAR and NSF NCAR are investigating the growing need for machine learning (ML) training in the Earth System Science (ESS) community, and we need your help to understand the needs. ML skills are typically acquired through specific graduate studies, specialized coursework, self-directed study, or on an ad-hoc basis. We want to hear from you about what we could do to fill some of that ML training gap!

The survey will be open through October 17th and we want to hear from as many people as possible. Feel free to distribute this survey to your colleagues and students in the Earth System Science community.  To be clear, we are focused on ML not Agentic AI, Generative AI, or LLMs (e.g., ChatGPT).

We will also be hosting a breakout session on this topic at the UCAR Annual Members Meeting in October.

If you have any questions about the survey, please feel free to reach out to Bryan Guarente (guar...@ucar.edu) or Mariana Cains (mgc...@ucar.edu).
