Hi RIEEE Colleagues,
Researchers at another institution are pursuing a
DARPA Fleetwood proposal and have reached out to App State in their search for a collaborator with expertise in
cellulosic material deconstruction. If you are interested in collaborating on this proposal, please reach out to Appalachian Energy Center Director Jamie Russell at
russ...@appstate.edu for additional information.

Abstract Submission Deadline: April 13, 2026 (Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal due June 4, 2026)
Program Summary:
The goal of the Fleetwood program is to develop stable, active, and selective catalysts that are capable of valorizing lignin-containing waste biomass feedstocks, both domestically and in deployed environments, thereby accessing a robust source for value-added chemicals and precursors.
Every year, gigatons of agricultural, forestry, and industrial residues are discarded. These waste streams are rich in lignin, nature’s largest source of valuable aromatic compounds that are otherwise difficult to produce. DARPA’s Fleetwood program aims to harness this untapped potential by funding the development of novel technologies that can convert these abundant, renewable resources into high-value chemicals, securing a resilient and sustainable domestic supply chain for the chemical manufacturing industry.
