Hi folks,

We are wrapping up some PRs for the next release of uPortal 5. We plan to release this as v5.17.0 in August.

What do you think about requiring future v5 releases to use Java 11 and Tomcat 10? Is anyone upgrading between v5 releases that is not currently or willing to use Java 11 and Tomcat 10?

We would certainly branch off from the next release if someone really wanted patches for v5.17.x for bug fixes and still HAVE to use Java 8.

Reasoning: we want to follow semantic versioning, which would require us to push off changes that are not backwards compatible until the next major release.

That all stated, we do hope to have a uPortal v6 release in Q4 of this year. More details to follow.

Have a great weekend!

Hi,

following is only my thoughts.

I'm not sure that's all portlets are compatible with java 11, so having both compatibility would be better if it's possible, and I think that we can have the uPortal-start working with java 11 and the portal running with java 8.

Else following the java version End Of Life we can run without problems with eclipse java version: https://endoflife.date/eclipse-temurin : java 8 support end at november 2026, java 11 support end at october 2027.

After for tomcat version 10.1 (java 11 min required), i think you will have several updates, whereas tomcat 9 has again support and can work with java 8 like java 11. And we have time (nearly the same EOL with java 11) before this version become EOL.

Thanks,

Julien
