Hi all!

Has anyone set up a Pass/Fail assignment in Gradebook? I am not seeing a place where you can do a Pass or Fail other than having 0 points maybe?

We are on 19.5 and going to 20.x next week and I don’t see it on either.

Thanks!

Jennifer

Hi, Jennifer.

Are you using an activity in Assignments and you want to associate a "Pass/Fail" grade scale item with the Gradebook?  We're on 19.5 and Assignments requires a "Points" grading scale item in order to associate an assignment with the Gradebook.  Not sure if this has changed in any later flavors of Sakai or not.

If you are using Assignments, I would make the assignment "Points" and assign 1 point to the activity (therefore 1=pass, 0=fail).  The Gradebook item would also be 1 point, but I could always modify the item to be visible to students but not include the value in the overall grade calculation (if that was a concern).  If my entire class was pass/fail, I would keep the 1 point, include the item in course grade calculations, and use the "Pass/Not Pass" option in the Gradebook Settings (Grading Schema).

If you are simply using Gradebook (not Assignments) to record any class activity as Pass/Fail, I would follow the same process with a 1 point Gradebook item (1 = pass, 0=fail).  You'd then choose whether or not to include that value in the overall calculations, depending on the goals.

You could potentially use a 0 point Gradebook item, leave each cell blank (ungraded), and use the Comments to mark Pass or Fail.  The student view of the Gradebook is different than the spreadsheet view, so they would see "Pass" or "Fail" in the comment field and "-" in the score box.

Anyway... just a few thoughts.  Others may have more suggestions on ways to approach this.

Hope this helps!
