Hello Sakai Users,

Over the past few weeks the University of Dayton has been developing a new tool to track attendance in Sakai.

We’re pleased to announce that Phase II of this new Attendance tool has been released locally and we wanted to share some of our new features with you.

Please click on the links below to learn more about the latest improvements and new features that have been added, or view our video demo of Phase II of the Attendance tool.

This project is still currently in development at the University of Dayton.

The source code can be found at https://github.com/udayton/attendance and we will happily consider any pull requests from interested developers / teams.

However, we are now starting our major upgrade from 2.9 to 11 and will not have the capacity to develop new features or improvements for a few months. Though, as a part of this process minor improvements will be made to enhance Sakai 11 compatibility and fit 11's style.

There are a few known areas where we know we would like to improve:
  • Internationalization
  • Improved accessibility
  • Ability to track attendance offline via Import and Export
  • Improved feedback messaging
Please let us know if you have any feedback or would like to contribute in the future!

Thanks,

University of Dayton E-Learning

Not sure if this tool can be adapted or if anyone else can help, but we are looking for a tool/checklist our students can use to keep track of their assignments on Sakai (turned in, in progress, not done, etc.).  Not all of our assignments are submitted through the Assignments tool (some are forum posts, some are Google docs, etc.) and we do not use Gradebook.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Much Thanks,

Hi,

From the videos, it looks clean and concise.

We have waited so long for an attendance tool, a real one.

Can we install it against 2.9.3 and 10.x?

Thank you for this tool, really great.

Bravo!

Hi Andrew,

I believe it would only take a few small modifications to make this tool work for that use case. However, even with those changes it might feel a bit odd to the user.

If you use Lessons, we've added a Checklist type that should meet your needs. Here is the related Jira:  https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/LSNBLDR-540.

However, we hit a couple snags when migrating the feature to Sakai 11 and had to put it on the back burner. The good news is that we've begun upgrading all of our features to 11 and will be revisiting this in the next few days/weeks. Hopefully, that means this feature will be available to everyone very soon.

If you want to learn more about the checklist feature there is a recording of the presentation Ryan Allen and I did for this past virtual conference. https://youtu.be/3CraER7UmfY

Hope that helps!

David

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback. We're glad others see the potential in an attendance tool like this!

We are currently running 2.9.3 in production with the attendance tool. There were a few changes we made from our 2.9.3 version to the current 11 version you see in Github.

I'm happy to make a branch with our 2.9.3 version of the tool so that you shouldn't have any problems. As for 10.x, we haven't completed any testing against that version. However, I'm sure the changes required to make it work with 10.x are minor and we should be able to make a branch for that as well if there is interest.

Hi David,

We have two production environments running 2.9.3 and 10.3 (upgrading to 10.6 in progress).

We wanted to use it on both systems, as long as our clients are not willing to upgrade the 2.9.3 soon.

Thank you so much for your effort.

If the change is minor, just point us to what files and what content to change. Otherwise, and if you have time and resources, you can provide us with separate sources.

Thank you once again.

Yours,
Alaa Nizar

Thanks to Leonardo Canessa you will now find a branch for 2.9.3 and one for 10.x.

2.9.3

10.x

The only change that you may need to make is in the 10.x version you might need to change the attendance root pom.xml file to point to the particular version of 10 that you are using (10.3, 10.6, etc.).

I don't believe there were any problems starting and adding the tool but extensive testing wasn't done.

Let me know if you have any questions!

All,

How do you designate an icon for the Attendance tool?

I personally think the icon for the sign-up tool is the best for the Attendance tool. I vote to swap it and find another icon for the sign-up tool.  If the sign-up tool is not used frequently, the change won't be too noticeable, would it? But it's not up to me. the sign-up tool is in Sakai community version, not the attendance tool.

We've done this by editing

/reference/library/src/morpheus-master/sass/base/_icons.scss

and adding the line

.icon-sakai--sakai-attendance {                           @extend .fa-calendar-check-o; }

then recompiling
