Hi Everyone,

In our most recent Apereo Teaching and Learning meeting, the group discussed a potential issue affecting the configuration of the peer assessment option in Sakai. Currently, as its name implies, peer assessment functions as peer grading.  It allows students to grade one another, and displays that feedback at the time when grades and comments are normally available—when the assignment is returned and can no longer be submitted.

It's reasonable to expect that instructors may wish to use the peer assessment option as peer review—that is, allowing students to see the feedback from their peer evaluators before making a resubmission.  We recently worked with an instructor who was attempting to use peer assessment in this way, and others at the meeting reported similar interactions with faculty.  However, the system does not display peer feedback until any resubmission deadlines have passed; the current workaround is to create a second assignment that would allow students to submit a final version of their assignment after reviewing all of the feedback from peers and instructors.  While this workaround isn’t a horrible one, it’s tedious and creates additional work for instructors.

Have other institutions experienced similar issues?  Are there other factors or concerns that should be considered when discussing peer assessment/peer review in Sakai?  We’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas!

Thanks!

Matt

Thank you for bring up this issue, Matt.
We, the Claremont colleges have also discussed the similar issue about waiting until any resubmission deadlines have passed. Another thing we have discussed is that we wish Sakai allows instructor to assign the peer review to the specific students. Currently I believe the students are assigned randomly. We have been asked from our faculty members how to assign a student to the specific student. if you know how to achieve this, please let me know.

Good afternoon -

We have had a faculty member approach it this way: She uses two versions of the assignment. Version one, the one getting the peer assessment, is considered the draft. The expectation is that the student whose work was reviewed will take into consideration the 2 or 3 comments they receive from their peers and will make improvements on the final version of the paper, which is the final and officially graded version.

Her desire was to provide the student reviewers with a rubric to follow when they conduct their reviews, and to have them attach the completed rubrics to the assignment when they do the review. David Bauer (UDayton) wrote code for this ability (for the reviewer to add an attachment to the grading screen) and we're anxious to try it out here at ND!

We could always attempt to add a second set of dates when a peer review assignment is being set up, but I worry that we run the risk of adding confusion to the Assignments settings screen (and invite Samigo's exception date problems) if we include more dates and time considerations to control peer reviews and final drafts/resubmissions within a single assignment.

There's my nickle's worth. :)
