Good morning.  Derek Ramsey suggested that I reach out to this group to ask the following question...

I am the Director of Distance Education and LMS administrator at West Liberty University.  This term, I had several faculty members report that they were unable to get a test bank that would import into Sakai from the publisher of their textbook.  It seems as if the publishers (Cengage being one) have stopped offering their test banks in text format.  For one course, I was able to download a text file for an individual test by going into the publisher learning platform, finding where I could set it up like I was going to print it (not at all easy to locate these options), saving it to a file, opening it in Word, etc.  When we work with someone to develop an online course, we fully expect that we may have to jump through these kinds of hoops.  Unfortunately, I don't have the staff to do this for faculty teaching face to face courses.  I need to be able to give them directions, and they want the process to be as simple as possible.  Has anyone else run into this issue?  If so, what are you telling faculty to do?  Has anyone found a way to convert files so they will import into Sakai?

Thanks!

Merilee Madera

Have you considered Respondus 4.0?  In the past (many moons ago) we purchased a small number of licenses for select professors. This Windows-based software allowed professors to access the Respondus Test Bank Network or import different test banks and then export to a format that Sakai could then ingest.  They have a free trial to explore.  A single copy is $79, and there are options for site licenses, etc.  Refer to the Respondus 4 pricing page.

It worked well in the past, and their test bank network had a lot of popular publishers back in the day.  You can search for Respondus' textbook publisher test banks to see if this might be viable.

Worth a look?

P.S. For professors on a Mac, perhaps a PC workstation in a faculty development office could be available for professors to use as needed, or the appropriate academic support person in the professor's area could assist from a PC?  Else, Parallels or another virtualization option may be possible. Just thinking out loud for any Mac instructors...

We have Respondus, but I’ll have to see if we have that feature.

Thanks

To +1 – we also use Respondus to pull publisher test banks into Sakai. There’s also Cognero – which I can’t recall the publisher but they provide some of their banks via that platform.

I used it [Respondus] as recently as this summer to pull assessments in.
