This is going to be a ramble, maybe even a rant, so bear with me...

There are so many shortcomings to Samigo ... it's like a small child who hasn't had their inoculations, hasn't been exposed to organized play groups or developmental preschool activities, has overworked parents who don't give it enough attention, so from time to time Samigo acts out, doesn't perform, behaves badly...

I want to get stuff out of Samigo and never go back... but I can't even do that.

  • QTI Validators don't seem to exist for 1.2 anymore. The world has moved on to QTI 2.2. (Nice validator for 2.2 here: https://webapps.ph.ed.ac.uk/qtiworks/anonymous/validator )
  • QTI 1.2 exports do not import correctly into Respondus 4 or MapleTA
  • Respondus 4 exports do not correctly import into Sakai 10.5

and on and on it goes (this is just one realm of functionality, there are plenty others!)...

I'm using this functionality as a conversation starter... What should the Sakai community do with Samigo Tests & Quizzes?

Simples: replace it with Mneme!

@Laura I'm curious too as to what alternatives are out there and what you intend to do?

We're starting to gather requirements from our faculty here at USU for exam software and to perhaps either fund community SAM improvements or procure a third-party product. DoD procurement is a lengthly process though. Most requirements have to do with question pool management, question history tracking, test statistics and learning analytics.

Also, it looks like Mneme hasn't been touched in 2 years?

We use Samigo and after the last few updates have had very little trouble with it. In fact 10.7 even fixed a few more things.

The only thing we don’t like is the instructor owns the pools not the course so if a new instructor takes over we have to go in as admins and fix that.

Maybe we are very simple in how we use the Samigo tool.

@jeffrey

We are exploring the non-mathematical use of Maple TA, for which we have a campus license and which does have an LTI tool and does scale for high stakes testing, and testing of groups of over 250 students at once (so, alternative to printing scantrons), as well as provide a 'proctored' experience which removes other windows and features of ones laptop (without another software like Respondus Lockdown browser).

We also at the same time are looking at ExamSoft, which is pricier, but there is some movement to create an LTI tool for it.

Thanks Jennifer,
I'm curious, how does one go about changing the ownership of a question pool? Do you alter the sharing attribute? Please advise ...

@Jeffrey

In our version of 10.6 there is a Transfer Ownership link in the question pools.  As an Admin I go in as the previous professor and then transfer ownership or share the pool(s).

Does this help?

Thanks Laura,
We've whittled down a list (by our instructional designed folks) from 11 to 6 vendors, 3 are locally hosted, 3 are cloud based. Being a DoD organization, we're faced with many more stringent requirements for working with the cloud, so I'd surmise we'll be looking at locally hosted tools. I can supply you more information as it becomes available if you'd like?
Regards,
-jeb
