Inactive Session Timeout value and Quiz Taking ... a hunch?

Recently Notre Dame changed our inactive session timeout value from 2 hrs to 8 hrs. By popular demand our users were bugged by their personal laptops also being timed out by the time they got back to work they'd started.

So now, we're hearing reports that Samigo test takers are getting notified they have two tabs open when they don't and that their 'saved answers' are appearing as blanks to their instructors.

Question 1: Are these two things related? (I think they might be...)
Question 2: If so, is the best remediation to have test takers always start with a freshly opened browser? (Like why wouldn't they in the first place? I dunno...)

Thanks in advance for your input,

Laura

Hi Laura,

At UVA, we provide an Essential Tips for Taking Online Tests help article and we recommend students review and follow the steps to ensure the best possible test-taking experience (among other recommendations, it includes not to use multiple tabs).  We also have a Best Practices for Delivering Online Tests & Quizzes article for instructors, which includes a recommendation that instructors have their students review the Essential Tips.

All the UVA Samigo articles have been copied to the Sakai ScreenSteps in an unpublished manual, UVA Articles Contrib; I think Laura C has access to it and can grab them if you want to use content from them in your ScreenSteps instance.  Some of the images could definitely use an update - I'm still working on updating the Samigo help locally.  Also, note that because we had some instructors who were offering "open resource" quizzes, where they allowed students to review feedback from previous quizzes while taking a quiz, we had to include in the Essential Tips instructions for how to download feedback before starting a new quiz - I'd recommend removing these instructions if you use the article.

Here are known causes of the "multiple tabs" warning and/or loss of responses:
  • Actually having multiple tabs/windows open to the quiz or the Tests & Quizzes tool - I'd check your logs to be sure the students actually don't have multiple tabs open - students are "mistaken" about this all the time!  A symptom in the logs of multiple tabs being open is having multiple login sessions active simultaneously.
  • Logging in and accessing the quiz or the Tests & Quizzes tool on a mobile device at the same time as you access it on a computer.
  • Using the internet browser's Back and Forward buttons instead of the built-in navigation.
  • Attempting to continue working past the latest submission date on an untimed test.  Unlike timed tests, untimed tests do NOT save your work OR warn you when the latest submission date triggers.  It looks like you can continue working on the test, but you can't.  Anything not saved prior to the latest submission date won't be submitted.
  • Experiencing an interruption in internet connection - this can result in the student clicking Save and the save not taking effect.
  •  (I'm not sure if Notre Dame has this) Experiencing an idle timeout on your login session (like if the login session on the university's system terminates before your 8 hour Sakai timeout).

Note that just accessing the Samigo main page at the same time you have a test open is likely to result in errors and lost answers.  You're even more likely to lose work if you attempt to access feedback on a previous test at the same time as taking a test (Samigo handles reviewing feedback pretty much the same as taking a test, so it's like you have two conflicting tests open at the same time).

Sincerely,
Tiffany

Tiffany!

Very helpful. I think this case met this circumstance you listed (and one I didn't know about):

  • Attempting to continue working past the latest submission date on an untimed test.  Unlike timed tests, untimed tests do NOT save your work OR warn you when the latest submission date triggers.  It looks like you can continue working on the test, but you can't.  Anything not saved prior to the latest submission date won't be submitted.
Thanks!

Actually Tiffany, it was a timed test, so it fits this pattern (past last submission date) except that it's also a timed test. We may have a new bug on our ND instance... unless others are also seeing this?

  • Attempting to continue working past the latest submission date on an untimed test.  Unlike timed tests, untimed tests do NOT save your work OR warn you when the latest submission date triggers.  It looks like you can continue working on the test, but you can't.  Anything not saved prior to the latest submission date won't be submitted.

Yeah, this is an old, nasty behavior that ought to be fixed so the latest submission date triggers like the expiration of a timer thread (saves/submits at the latest submission date).  I have been meaning to create a jira for this but haven't gotten around to it because I haven't had the chance to test it in 12 with the date/time exceptions feature in play.

The latest submission date ought to cut the timer short, i.e. if you start the test too close to that date, you should start with a truncated timer.  During testing for UVA's upgrade to 11.2, I found an issue where the due date was not truncating the timer correctly (instead, I was getting the ugly behavior below of some answers not being saved), and that was fixed before the upgrade.

However, UVA has different timers than the Sakai ones, so unfortunately I don't have experience testing it with the Sakai timers.  You should be able to test it pretty easily.  Create a timed test that allows 30 min, but has the latest submission date set to 5 minutes from when you'll start it.  See how many minutes it says you have to take it after clicking begin, and see if you can continue working on it (with answers not saved) after those 5 minutes.

Laura, I can commiserate in general, but our specifics may be different.

After upgrading from 2.9 to 11.2, we began to see a few timed tests that submitted with answers lost (on tests that were set to display one question per page). Our session timeout is set at 1 hour and we haven’t changed it (although I’m wondering if we should).

More frequently, we are also seeing timed tests that don’t submit when the timer runs out – this doesn’t happen for all tests – it occurs maybe 10-12 times a semester. (see SAM-3221) We had never seen this latter behavior prior to our upgrade.

The logs for some affected students show what looks like multiple open browsers or concurrent logins on multiple devices, but we don’t see that for all affected students. The students affected weren’t bumping into the last submit date/time either.

In an attempt to do something, we decided to append a message at the bottom of the “Begin Assessment” screen alerting students not to use multiple browsers, tabs or devices. (see screenshot) But I have not gotten around to adding it on production yet. The excellent tips from UVA  (thanks, Tiffany!) remind me that I need to get that done, as multiple tabs/devices do cause problems.

Best,
Karen

Thanks for the commiseration Karen. I've seen more false positives on that multiple tab open warning than true multiple tabs open!  ~LauraG

I just finished testing twice. I am prevented from continuing taking timed and untimed tests alike by the last submission date. That's good; as hoped for. My saved and unsaved answers are submitted for me. And I did not encounter any multiple tab error messages...

Hello all!

As a best practice, what do your institutions have your time out set to? Our institution still has ours at 1HR (default) and we have entered discussions about increasing it, so we are reaching out to other institutions to find out what they are finding has worked well for them.

We really appreciate any input/feedback.

Thank you for your time,

Ben

We have it set to 90 minutes…this has been for few years without problems (that we are aware of).  There is popup that occurs roughly about 5-10 minutes before to allow the user to continue without interruption.
