So, is Postem still a supported tool in the community? Do folks still use it or are we one of the few-only?

We see this a lot where faculty create an entry and sometimes it works fine, other times it gets corrupted and throws a stack track error. We (or the faculty member) update the entry so it does not display to the students (it will not delete) and create another and it works fine (for a while).

If too many entries get corrupted, I contact our support as the delete does not work when corrupted and it needs to be removed manually from the database which is even more frustrating. We are on 21, but have experienced this for a few years.

There must be some cause, but it seems to happen randomly.

So, I’m just wondering if, moving forward, we should remove this tool? I kind of hate to as I know a few of our faculty, who are comfortable with Excel, like it.

Just wondering if others use it, or have experienced the errors and maybe figured out what not to do to keep it working.

Jim.

It's fully supported, we rewrote the tool in a different technology in 2020 for Sakai 22, and I remember doing many fixes.

Postem for Sakai 21 is still supported to it can receive updates in case we find bugs.

Regards

We’re transitioning to Canvas and we have many of our teachers that have cried because it’s not in Canvas – we found it a very useful tool!

It's not heavily used at Duke. Out of ~2500 Fall 2021 sites, nine have the tool added. I didn't check if those nine actually had content added; it's likely less have used it. Haven't had any complaints or reports of errors but that could be cause we have so little local usage. It looks like there are 11 fixes for v21 and above.

IMO it does have a lot of overlap in function with importing directly to gradebook so a little redundant to have both tools. However, there are probably use cases at other universities where instructors prefer it to the gradebook. It is the type of tool that some instructors could fall in love with over the early Sakai years and be heartbroken (ie very vocal to support teams) if it's removed.

If you can reliably make an error occur, reporting the workflow and error in a Jira would be helpful to community.  If you can only get it to randomly happen, perhaps next time it does happen, post to the Dev group board with error and they may be able decipher whether it's something local or if issue is in core code.

Thanks for this insight Marty,

At our institution it was used for posting comments by a team of clinicians, so distributing a spreadsheet and allowing them to make brief comments that could be quickly uploaded is missed in Canvas.  Grades can easily be imported but Canvas Gradebook doesn’t allow import of comments.  Curriculum Coordinators have to paste and copy through Speedgrader but it increases the risk of mistakenly posting comments to the incorrect student when posting for 165 medical students (additionally there are FERPA issues if posted to the incorrect student) not to mention time consuming.  We work with 21 associated hospitals and many volunteer physicians so having them learn Canvas to do grading (or Sakai for the matter) presents a different set of hurdles.  For our curriculum coordinators of year 3 and 4 medicine it’s really missed.  We hope Canvas in the future will add support for import of comments.  In the meantime I’m looking into what you have posted and appreciate your efforts!

I’ve also been looking at enhancements developed by Colorado for importing comments utilizing TamperMonkey

https://oit.colorado.edu/services/teaching-learning-applications/canvas/enhancements-integrations/enhancements#commentsimporter

We have a limited number of faculty using PostEm. I have not heard of any having issues such as you have reported.

Hi Jim,

We do have instructors using it.  Some use cases I’m aware of:

  • Instructor creates items in Post’Em to assign pass/fail, letter grades, or “specifications” grades (like “meets competency”) for activities they don’t want to add individually in Assignments.
  • Instructor uses the tool to add comments for ungraded items.
  • Instructor uses Post’Em to work around the inability to show students only the questions they got wrong as feedback in Samigo (the instructor exports the student responses as a spreadsheet, and edits it for each student to only include the desired questions to show them).

We haven’t gotten reports of the bug you mentioned though.
