Hello Apereo PMC members,

Apereo, with support from Josh Baron (Development Officer), is working to pursue a new and somewhat novel funding opportunity focused on helping to sustain active OSS projects. I'm reaching out as, in order to qualify, we will need projects to assist with a small technical step that should take no more than 5 minutes. In order to meet the funding deadline, we will need to hear back from projects no later than Wednesday, March 26th. Below are more details, happy to answer any questions as well!

WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?
The funder, FLOSS/Fund (see https://floss.fund/), which recently launched, is using a JSON file as the application for funding with the goal of making OSS project funding needs "discoverable" on the Internet. While initially the JSON file will just be used by them to select foundations and projects for funding, it could facilitate much broader awareness of funding needs that other funds might then address. Josh has been working on this "application" with the plan to share any funding we receive (which could be up to $100,000) equally between the foundation and the projects and also help create a mini-grant program that would support student involvement in OSS projects on our campuses.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU?
Once we finalize the JSON file, which we anticipate completing next week, we will be posting it to the Apereo domain at https://www.apereo.org/funding.json and submitting it to the funder's website to "apply." One of their requirements is that any project that is part of Apereo that wants to participate will need to create a directory in your GitHub repo called ".well-known/funding-manifest-urls" and just list the URL to the Apereo-hosted JSON file. This is their way to ensure that the foundation has a relationship with the projects. Here is an example GitHub repo (see https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugarizer) from another foundation that has been setup already.

WHAT TO DO NEXT?
Please reply to this email by end of day Wednesday, March 26th, to indicate who on your project can set up the directory and list the URL. We will follow up on Thursday with that person via email to coordinate on any final technical steps and confirm that the JSON file has been uploaded on our end and that you can set things up.  We need to complete this work by the end of the day on Friday, March 28th in order to be included in the first round of funding.
