1) Could so many videos playing out of Resources cause performance issues instance wide?
2) What kind of help are you providing to your faculty? Do you increase their quotas so they can do it? Or do you provide instructions on how to upload to whatever streaming video service you provide?

I hate to think of future support issues if this continues. Or am I being paranoid?

At Duke, we utilize Warpwire. Disclaimer: The company is located across from our campus and has some ties to the university.

Not a sys admin so can't speak to what type of performance hit there could be. However, I'd recommend utilizing a service specifically designed for streaming video (Warpwire, YouTube, Vimeo, Zoom, etc). If those aren't possible, at least moving the files out of Sakai and onto a cloud management service (Box, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc) would at least get the burden of file storage out of Sakai. If a link is created to a video file on most of these services, they were stream the file for the viewer.

Delivering files from Sakai is not especially resource-intensive for the application. Self-hosted Sakai institutions have lots of available bandwidth and Sakai vendors mainly host on the cloud with access to near-infinite amounts of bandwidth charged per GB. The problem with video delivery is that you are no longer delivering to a population hosted exclusively on a fast campus network. The students at home with great internet connections will have no problem, but the students in rural settings with DSL or mobile access will suffer. Video solutions like Warpwire, Kaltura, Vimeo, and Youtube handle lots of underlying complexity like delivering the best compression to your device (e.g., old Windows IE gets one codec while updated iPhone gets optimized codec) and the maximum bitrate for your connection (high-def for the good connections and low-def for the bad connections). Sakai Resources simply delivers the large, unoptimized video to your end users.

If you are an Office365 school you may have access to Stream to load videos and link to them as well.

Depending on how you pay for server space, keeping videos in Sakai could get expensive. And I believe that actual media servers may be configured in ways that the servers hosting an LMS wouldn't be, so that could lead to performance issues. We are using WarpWire and strongly encouraging our instructors to upload videos there. It seems to integrate reasonably well with Sakai.

Hi Laura,

Thanks for your post. I am interested in the response, especially the one about performance issues.

We have already had faculty express concerns that they cannot upload MP4 files to Sakai. The file sizes are not that big (under the limit) and they are under their quota. So there's no apparent reason they shouldn't be able to upload them.

We do increase quota when necessary. We also encourage faculty to save their video files on Google Drive, set the sharing permissions and share via Sakai. However, this doesn't work for our students who are studying from China.

Good luck,

Beth

Thanks Marty. Yes, ND uses Panopto. The issue is not many have used it and continue to upload directly to Sakai even with the plug-in available. LG.

Hi Laura,

I’m not sure what services you’re using at ND, but most instructors I’ve worked with seem to understand at least one of the following reasons for using one of the streaming services we have available at UVA (Kaltura and Panopto):

  • No file upload limits and uploads don’t count against your Resources quota.
  • Easy to publish videos in multiple sites.
  • Students can play videos directly in the browser without having to download them first, on multiple devices (computers and mobile devices).
  • For the copyright-conscious (or just those who are embarrassed about having their lecture videos disseminated), videos uploaded to Kaltura are not downloadable by students by default.
  • Both tools come with applications you can download to easily record and edit lecture videos.
  • Additional helpful features:
