Hi, Shawn,
Does the SCORM player tool send any xAPI events out?
I added the sakai dev list to see if we can get a response to the following:

SCORM has now been superseded by the TinCan api (xAPI) and now tools like Articulate and Captivate support that standard.  Has any school looked at implementing a TinCan api plugin for Sakai?  I wonder what kind of effort would be required to create one similar to the TinCan api plugin that Moodle has:

It is based on the following:

Because we have some interest on campus to run Captivate modules, we are going to do a pilot project to use a sister school's Moodle instance (they are across the street from our campus) to run the module as a provider and use LTI to connect to Sakai as consumer.  It will also send xAPI to our LRW for analytics.

It would be nice if someone had some resources to do similar plugin for Sakai.   I wonder what effort would take to use the Rustici code above to create one for Sakai?

Hi, David.

At Western, we use the SCORM Player tool for SCORM. It has a detailed results section for you to get individual results for each learner, which you can export to a file. It also can send scores to the Gradebook. We use GradebookNG, which works the same as it did with Gradebook Classic (since both Gradebooks use the same underlying structure).

We've been improving SCORM Player since we started using it a few years ago; we've improved error handling and added additional features. We still want to improve the interface and the user experience, which both need some attention.

If you have SCORM (2004 3rd Edition) modules and want a native Sakai tool that integrates with other Sakai tools, I'd suggest trying SCORM Player:

https://github.com/sakaicontrib/SCORM.2004.3ED.RTE

The more institutions using it, the better it could become.

Ok ok ok, I know – everyone is doing XAPI, but I have a faculty member asking about being able to implement content provided by:

https://blending.education/library/concepts-of-biology-course/

in a course – specifically because it’s an OpenStax Ally and the content is very easy to plug in to our Sakai 11.3 instance. What I don’t know is the feed scores over to GB part – esp. since we’re using GBNG.

I can get the content to play just fine, though I don’t think we have a SCORM player.  Does anyone else know anything about this or getting Scorm to play nice with GBNG? Do I have to get a scormcloud subscription (for example) for this to really pass data to the GB?

Here’s some eye candy of what’s possible – this is displayed in the course as an HTML file located in resource and made to be a navigation link from Resources:

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll also contact our Sakai host – maybe they know the answer about scorm content in our instance. 😉

Hi, Pat.

The SCORM Player does not output xAPI events.

I'd expect it would be a lot of work to build a new xAPI player tool for Sakai, even if we used Moodle's as a starting point, but I don't have experience with xAPI modules or with Moodle tools. Not out of the question though if the community wants it, and funding and development resources are allocated.

Thanks for the info on the Scorm player!   That could be a solution for an instructor who wanted to run her Articulate module in Sakai and uploaded it only to find out it would not run like she expected.  She came from a Moodle school!

Dave, Shawn, Pat, et al,

I’m a little late to this party and I don’t have an answer for getting scores from SCORM to the Gradebook, but I wanted to let you know that it is also possible to embed SCORM/Common Cartridge into the Lessons tool.

You’d need to upload and unpack the zipped SCORM package into the Resources of the site, then use Lessons > More Tools > Import CC to select the HTML5 version of the SCORM content from Resources.

Cheers,

Trisha

Hm, that’s beyond my ken, Dave – sorry! Perhaps someone on the dev list knows, or perhaps the content can be exported again from Articulate for 1.1?

Trish,

Ok, I'm starting to see a way to do this, but with what you said,

"You’d need to upload and unpack the zipped SCORM package into the Resources of the site, then use Lessons > More Tools > Import CC to select the HTML5 version of the SCORM content from Resources."

I've tried this as you describe, but I don't have the option to select from the course Resources, only to upload a zip file.  If I go to import the zip file I get the following error:

On the Lesson page. So perhaps I'd need to confirm the file version - which according to what I have for two separate SCORM zipped files they're version 1.2 and SCORM 2004 3rd respectively.

If the version supersedes the file requirement - is that a property I have to alter (to allow for)?

Hi Thangaraj!

Before answering your question, please try to open new mail threads when you are asking for a different questions. This one was about SCORM and is not related with your request.

Said this, here is the link to the installation guide. It explains how to do it in Win, Mac or Linux, so you only need to follow the specific instructions for Linux to install it on ubuntu.

https://confluence.sakaiproject.org/display/DOC/Sakai+12+Install+Guides

If you want to install another older version, you can search for it on that same place.
