Dear All,

One of our course sites is having a WebDAV connection issue. When we try to connect it, WebDAV throws the following error:

Inline image 1

I cannot find any anomalies on the url, although it complaint about the invalid directory name.

I thought there may be something weird going on with on with one of the uploaded files in the site, so I downloaded them and uploaded each by each to the test site. WebDAV is working fine with the same file at the test site.

I removed all uploaded files from the site and hope it does not give any errors, but it gave me the same error when there are no files in the site.

This happens on both Windows and Mac, and Cyberduck.

Does anybody have the similar experience?

Best,

S

Thank you, Adam for your reply. That may answer.
However, I am puzzled that I cannot find any funny character in his files.

I am also puzzled that I can upload the same files with the same file name into other sites and I am still using the WebDAV successfully.
I also deleted all files from the site in problem, but I am still getting the same directory invalid error.

By any chance, do you remember which character causes your issue?

Folders containing a single quote character broke webdav – this was back in 2008!

Maybe it has something to do with the course id or name, since you are saying it works in other courses?

Hi all,

I don't know if it will help with the specific problem Sanghyun, but we have a help article recommending against file/folder names that have presented specific problems before: Why aren't my uploaded files working?

As described in the Help article, another possible cause of issues is the nesting of folders/total length of a resulting file path.  Oddly, we've found that if you manage to upload one file that results in a file path greater than 250 characters, subsequent upload attempts to the same folder may fail.

Hi Tiffany,

the 255 limit in Resources path has been a headache since we started to use Sakai. There are plans to make it bigger but is really complex.

https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-11816

A little trick that we tell to users when they are working with a big path full of folders is:

-Create the new folder with a short string, for example an acronym or just "aa". This creates a folder with an URL as https://<server>/access/content/group/<SITE>/<BIG PATH>/aa/

-Edit the folder "aa" properties and rename it to the real name, for example "The top 50 misconceptions that have become modern day facts".

-Now the URL (the one that has the 255 characters limit) is still https://<server>/access/content/group/<SITE>/<BIG PATH>/aa/ but the folder's name is the long one that users wanted.

This is not helpful when the URL must be readable mandatory, but is very useful for some advanced users.

HTH.

Yeah the more updated issue is here we did talk a little on https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/KNL-1501 to go to 768 for utfmb4 with modern versions of MySQL or to have a separate index column and remove the index from the file/directory names. But both/either of these solutions would be some work and hasn't been done yet.
