Folks,
Just wondering if campuses have run into this and perhaps there is an issue with our set up.  In Lessons when we add External Tools, we're presented with a list of system wide tools.  If we want to include a site specific LTI tool we'd "Manage of Install Tools" then the newly added tool should appear on the list of *external tools along with the system wide tools ... it's not.  Is there something to configure or I misconfigured?

Thanks,
Kenwrick

As it turns out, at least for our set up checking off "Allow external tool to configure itself (the tool must support the IMS Content-Item or Deep-Link message)" takes it off the External Tool Selector list (or doesn't put it on).

Hi Kenwrick,

If you’re looking at Sakai 19+, the missing tools you mentioned might be hidden under the “Add Learning App” section instead of “Add External Tool”.  Here’s a comment I made recently about that change in the sakai-dev Slack chat:

I'm curious as to why some LTIs to be linked in Lessons are under "Add Learning App" and some under "Add External Tool"?  There doesn't appear to be correct logic for this in place if "Learning App" is supposed to be for all LTI 1.3 tools and "External Tool" is for the rest.  Or is "Learning App" supposed to mean there are deeper hooks into Sakai than for other tools?  Either way, I'm very confused about what I'm finding there.

For example:

  • Gradescope (LTI 1.3) is under "Add Learning App".
  • Kaltura Video Quiz (not LTI 1.3) is under "Add Learning App".  Kaltura itself has deep hooks into Sakai, but it doesn't seem like the video quiz link to Gradebook behaves much differently from other tools that are found under "Add External Tool" (e.g., VoiceThread and Peerceptiv).
  • SensusAccess, which has extremely deep hooks into Resources, appears under "Add External Tool".

Even if the logic were clear ("Learning App" = LTI 1.3 and "External Tool" = Everything else), it is terribly confusing to instructors who will have no clue about the difference between the types of LTI, and for whom it is not at all meaningful.

Apparently this was the jira that put it in place: https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-37435

UVA is currently in the process of upgrading to Sakai 20, and as we don’t have any LTI tools that act like an “app store”, it would just create confusion for instructors to have to look in two different places for the same functionality (and the language used in the “app store” section might seem like you’re buying something).  David Hutchins is working on developing a property to put all the LTIs back under “Add External Tool”.
