I have seen a few threads where folks were struggling to get a local demo instance up and running, so I put together a .deb package and a few instructions. Hope it can be helpful.

Hi David,

Thanks for this!

I just tried installing on a Virtualbox (using Vagrant).

I got up to step 2 on the Sakai install and I get this error:

ubuntu@ubuntu-xenial:~$ sudo apt install ./sakai-11.4.deb
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'sakai' instead of './sakai-11.4.deb'
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
sakai : Depends: libmysql-java but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

---------------------
Should I manually install libmysql-java? Did I miss a step?

Thanks,
Neal

If it's a fresh Vagrant, you may have to do "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" first. I should probably have put that in the doc too.

Success! Yes, just performing the sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade was sufficient.

Should I write to you off-list with other questions as they come up?

for example, I can't create a course site because I'm "not a maintainer role in any course sections."

Of course I can create project sites, but seems good to be able to do both. Is there an easy way to make myself a maintainer to have that option?  Or do I need to work around that by logging in as admin?
