Hi all

I wanted to share some news, Johns Hopkins University has launched (what I believe is) the first Open Source Program Office in higher education (please let me know if there are others).

The creation of an OSPO highlights an institutions' understanding of, and commitment to, not only open source software, but also other open initiatives such as, OER, open content, open access, open education, open journals, etc. Johns Hopkins could be the exemplar other institutions need to invest in the support required to develop and manage their own open initiatives, as well as engage with others (let's hope so!).

There is a video of the announcement (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zMpXsF9P1w) by Sayeed Choudhury (https://members.educause.edu/sayeed-choudhury),

As institutions of higher education invest in more open initiatives (not just software, but again things like OER), I believe Open Source Programs Offices will become critical for successfully developing/adopting, implementing, and managing open resources--just as they have already in corporate environments [1,2,3,4,5,]. JHU serves as a testament to their value, and a model for their adoption (i.e. how to get your own institution to start thinking about, and then create, their own OSPO).

I've taken the liberty of cc'ing Jacob Green and Sayeed here, who I expect can better explain the details of the OSPO and its work.

Thanks all,
Patrick
