The Apereo Incubation process is designed to provide a structured and mentored pathway from being a “good idea” - often to meet the needs of an individual institution - towards broader applicability and sustainability. Over several years, the Apereo Incubation process has graduated eight projects to form new Apereo Software Communities. A further four projects remain in incubation at present. Periodically, the Apereo Incubation Working Group reviews the incubation process with a view to improving it. The Group is currently discussing two changes to the process.
The first would introduce a “pre-incubation period”, allowing an institution or other organisation to “test the water” and assess community interest. The second would introduce a concrete time commitment for the sponsor of an incubating project to provide assistance to help craft governance for the project and software community. From experience, this is one of the areas most incubating projects need help with.
