EDUCAUSE List Question: LMS Mandate?

Hello all,

A recent question arose on the EDUCAUSE lists that I thought the vast
experience of the teaching and learning, Sakai LMS, and online ed folks
here might be able to help with; "Does your institution have a
campus-wide mandate that all faculty must use the LMS, regardless of
course modality?"

If you have any insights, Jon Howle, Learning Design and Development
Technologist at Guilford College (cc'ed here) would appreciate your
thoughts.

Hi Patrick et al.

Such mandates do frequently exist in UK institutions for a few reasons (a) IP of courses is owned by the institution (b) less reliance on textbooks, more use of licensed library resources, requiring a secure delivery system to the class (c) accessibility compliance requirements (slides, handbooks, handouts, reading lists to be made available X weeks in advance of key dates. In general there’s a greater use of digital resources in learning and teaching in UK HE even in fully campus based courses than I have seen in North America (sweeping generalisation I know).
