cas-maven-overlay config and customization questions

New to maven, long time user of CAS, and first time building a CAS server.  Our current CAS server is 4.0. I'm working to set up a CAS 5.0.2 server in order to leverage SAML2 support for an application that supports SAML2 protocol but not CAS protocol. I need that application to authenticate via our CAS server for SSO. 

2 Questions:

1.) After I have done an initial  "./build.sh package",  where do I make changes to files in the target directory that will not disappear on my next "package" but rather are in corporated into the .WAR file --style changes as well as configuration changes. 

2.) I am under the impression that SAML support is much move developed in version 5 than 4  -- is this assumption correct?

Depends on what sort of changes. Typically it’s either etc/cas/config or src/main/resources.
