Google Apps Support Broken in 5.2.9

Support for Google Apps is broken in 5.2.9.

I assume the change that broke Google Apps on 5.3.x [1] [2] was back-fed sometime after 5.2.4 (our current production release, which is working as expected) and 5.2.9 (which no longer works as expected):
