Dear Apereo Community,

You may have caught it on our Apereo Foundation LinkedIn channel, or seen it in the Apereo news feed — we’ve launched something we’re truly excited about: the Open Renaissance Group. As a founding partner, Apereo is helping bring together a global community of researchers, educators, technologists, and institutional leaders to reaffirm the power of open solutions in higher education.

For many of you who have been with us since the very beginning, you know that open source is about more than code. As everyone ever interviewed for Apereo Foundation Fast, what keeps us part of this community is the people, our opportunities for genuine collaboration, and shared purpose. Organizing a global community toward a single goal takes energy, dedication, and heart. We are especially grateful to Josh Baron on the Apereo staff, who has tirelessly led this effort since the Strategy Jam at EDUCAUSE in Nashville in 2025. What started as an in-person conversation full of ideas and energy has grown into a global call to action: the Open Letter to Higher Education.

This letter invites our institutions to move beyond extractive digital models and embrace co-creation: shared governance, shared investment, and shared stewardship of the tools that power teaching, learning, and research.

Over the next few weeks, you’ll see many posts from Apereo highlighting this letter. We’d love your help in spreading the word:

  • Sign the Open Letter if you haven’t already

  • Share it on your social channels (LinkedIn Post for today)

  • Circulate it within your institutions and professional networks

  • Encourage others in your open source, research, and education communities to join in

These next two weeks are critical — your voice, your energy, and your support really do matter. Thank you for being part of this close-knit, generous community. Your dedication over the years is what makes movements like this possible, and we are so grateful to walk this path with you.

With warm regards and gratitude,
Michelle Hall
