New open source initiative aims to help institutions collaboratively develop LMS-agnostic LTI® tools that address evolving teaching and learning needs

The Apereo Foundation is pleased to announce that MuLTItool Forge has officially entered the Apereo Incubation process.

MuLTItool Forge (formerly LTI® Forge) is a collaborative open source community focused on developing, sharing, and maintaining high-quality, LTI®-compliant tools that help institutions address functional gaps in enterprise Learning Management Systems (LMS). The project seeks to empower colleges and universities to move faster than vendor roadmaps while collaboratively addressing emerging teaching and learning challenges.

“MuLTItool Forge represents the kind of collaborative innovation that open source communities make possible,” said Patrick Masson, Apereo’s Executive Director. “Institutions across higher education are increasingly building custom LTI® applications to support unique teaching and learning needs. By bringing these efforts together in an open, standards-based community, MuLTItool Forge creates opportunities to reduce duplicated effort, improve interoperability, and accelerate innovation for everyone involved.”

As enterprise LMS platforms have become increasingly monolithic and mission-critical, many institutions have found it difficult to modify or extend their core systems directly. In response, innovation has increasingly shifted toward Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI®) applications, which can be added or removed without disrupting the underlying LMS environment.

However, institutions frequently develop these applications in isolation, resulting in duplicated work and tools that may not translate easily across LMS platforms or institutions.

MuLTItool Forge aims to bridge these silos by creating a collaborative environment where developers and institutions can openly contribute, refine, and share reusable tools designed for interoperability across LMS ecosystems.

The project describes this process as “forging” tools together — collectively refining and sharpening code into elegant, effective, and reusable solutions that can benefit the broader higher education community.

Rather than focusing on a single software platform, MuLTItool Forge will serve as a curated ecosystem of open, LMS-agnostic learning tools designed to support evolving educational needs and emerging technologies.

“Universities frequently invest significant time and resources developing tools that already exist elsewhere in higher education,” said Wilma Hodges, Co-Founder and PMC Chair of MuLTItool Forge. “By building a collaborative community, MuLTItool Forge allows institutions to pool their expertise, eliminate duplicate efforts, and shape better solutions for learners and educators. The raw materials are here, the fire is lit, and it’s time to forge something great together.”

Apereo’s incubation process provides scaffolding and mentorship for new open source projects and communities as they move through critical formative stages. The process emphasizes community development, open governance, sustainability, and mentorship from experienced members of the Apereo ecosystem.

Organizations and individuals interested in participating in the incubation process as a project or mentor are encouraged to contact e...@apereo.org.
