Dear Apereo Community,
We’re pleased to share a new feature article in Campus Technology that speaks directly to the heart of our mission:
🎓 “A Return to Openness: Apereo Examines Sustainability in Open Source”
By Mary Grush | Read the full article
In this thoughtful Q&A, Apereo’s Executive Director, Patrick Masson, and Development Officer, Josh Baron, discuss the critical—but often invisible—role open source plays in higher education today, and why sustaining it is a shared responsibility.
As our community is well aware, from learning platforms to enterprise IT systems, open source is everywhere—but often underfunded, under-recognized, and assumed to "just work." This interview is an important reminder that higher ed’s digital future depends on the open tools we all rely on—and on the communities that maintain them.
Here are three meaningful ways you can help sustain open source at your institution or organization:
Talk to your C-suite leadership.
Many decision-makers are unaware of how much their operations—directly or indirectly—depend on open source. Help raise awareness and start conversations about the need to invest in open source as infrastructure, not just software. Share this article with them!
Advocate for membership and financial support.
Encourage your institution or organization to join the Apereo Foundation as a member or sponsor. Collective investment helps us maintain governance, development, and community support for projects like Sakai, CAS, Opencast, and many others.
Help amplify Apereo’s mission—quietly or loudly.
Not everyone is comfortable on a stage, and that’s okay. You can support open source advocacy in your own way:
Share Apereo news or project updates on social media or internal team channels.
Recommend Apereo membership or participation in meetings to a colleague.
Introduce Apereo to a new department quietly via email, like sharing a microconf invite!
Mention your use of Sakai, CAS, or other Apereo tools during presentations, proposals, or grant applications.
Every voice helps—especially when it comes from real-world experience.
Thank you for being part of this vibrant and essential community. Together, we can ensure open source continues to serve the public mission of higher education for years to come.
Warmly yours,
Michelle
