uPortal Winter Summit Program

Hi folks,

It’s time to nail down the actual topics for the Winter Summit. We can probably cover about 8 items, and it just so happens that there were 8 topics with 42% or higher response selection in a recent survey.

The topics are:
1. Microservices
2. “Dockerizing" uPortal
3. New uPortal APIs and API Management
4. UoE Notifications i.e. Fiosan
5. uPortal Integrations (LMS, ERP, HRS,etc.)
6. Automated Releasing / Deployment Tools
7. JavaScript Developer Best Practices
8. Interface Design and Development

So what specifically do you want to cover under each of these? More importantly who can talk on a subject in each topic for an hour or so?

Personally, I can provide a condense version of our “Dockerizing uPortal” training.

It would be great to see a handful of presenters share their experiences with the community. Please volunteer to present!

Hi folks,

Here’s an update on the agenda for the Summit.

During the overlap hours, Julien and I picked some topics.

Monday — I will provide an overview of uPortal APIs, and an intro to web component development with a simple example
Tuesday — Julien will provide a deep-dive into a non-trivial web component
Wednesday — as a group, we will have an open discuss on Fiosan (UoE Notifications), uPortal integrations, automation and tooling for uPortal

Also, expect to see registration start soon. A hotel discount rate is also available for a short period and will be announced next week.

Next week is the Summit. Anyone want to volunteer to present on a topic? Presenters' time preferences will take precedence over other slots outside of 10am-12pm ET joint sessions.

PROGRAM

Intro to uPortal
This session will cover the very basics of uPortal. What is the project mission, history, and current structure.

uPortal Screenshots
In this session, screenshots from various implementations will be shared. They will range from the classic tabbed view to newer layouts using web components.

Web Components Primer
New to web components? This session will ramp you up on the technologies and available uPortal web components.

Upgrading uPortal 5
Follow a live case study of upgrading an early version of uPortal 5 to the latest 5.8.1 version. Gotchas will be uncovered and addressed.

uPortal Integrations BoF
Please call in to share how your portal has been integrated with other services. This is going to be a session that asks attendees to share their stories.

Web Components Styling
Julien will be presenting on styling web components and using CSS Variables to change the look of your web components.

Web Components Communication
How do you get your web components to talk to each other? How do you get them to talk to others that are based on other technology? This session covers how to go way back to JS events for communication.

OIDC, uPortal APIs, Microservices
Now that you know how to make a simple web component, how do you get data into and out of it? Join us to find out how to securely communication with uPortal and other back-end services.

“Dockerizing” uPortal
Did you know that uPortal-start can create Docker images for you out of the box? Well, there are some gotchas to be aware of. Call in to learn more about using Docker and uPortal.

“Technical Roadmap”
Let’s talk about what we want to see in uPortal 6, what we DON’T want to see, and other topics related to the next year for uPortal. For example:
- How important is it to move past Java 8?
- Is it really important to make the upgrade easy? Worth skimping on new features?


While physical attendance is low, I hope many of you find time to call in to several of these sessions.
