Hello all,

A couple of threads on Reddit and EDUCAUSE caught my eye...

Apparently those accessing an LMS (Canvas, D2L, and Blackboard were specifically mentioned) get a prompt through Chrome offering AI-powered "Homework Help."

I was wondering if Sakai users are seeing this too?

I have not seen this personally, but if it is a browser-based AI feature, then I'm pretty sure it would apply to any LMS, or any web page for that matter. However, if it is based on AI features within the LMS, then Sakai users won't see it, since Sakai currently has no AI features at all. If that is the case, this could be an instance where the fact that we don't have AI feature parity with other LMSs actually works in Sakai's favor.

I agree with you that this could be a feature and something to introduce to the discussion.

I was thinking though, that is may be domain specific. I looked at this through the Longsight demo course, but I wonder if thw Chrome extension uses the .edu URL to spark the homework helper.

Can anyone on a campus confirm?

I also saw that Lock Down Brewers block the extension as well.

I'd love it if we could make hay from this!!!

I've previewed sites as a student on some of Longsight client's instances with the .edu extension recently, and I'm not seeing it there. However, it could be that I have something disabled in my browser. (I tend to find the AI helpers a bit annoying most of the time.) That said, none of our .edu folks have mentioned it to me so far.

(On mobile. Forgive typos.)

It definitely impacts Sakai. It doesn’t appear until you’re in a quiz, though. In Canvas LMS it will appear throughout a class site. It didn’t appear in Sakai until I tried a quiz (in preview mode as instructor — I didn’t try other modes, tools, or user types)).

In a Sakai quiz, the “homework help” option appeared. After agreeing to Google Lens.. it processed the quiz, offered option to help (eg Solve question 1) and provided the correct answer for the simple multiple choice question.

That said, we are a Google shop with Google for Education plan. So, I am not sure if the domain must be a Google for Education domain or if it appears for everyone regardless of the Google plan.

I hope this helps.

Best,
Alan
