CAS5.2 LDAP Types

Can someone explain to me the different LDAP types? I don't exactly understand the purpose of AD, Authenticated, Anonymous, or DIrect. If there is documentation somewhere, that would be appreciated too.

There's also some more detailed stuff about each method in the ldaptive documentation, but you have to kind of hunt for it. I found it once about a year ago, but of course I didn't save the link... :-(
