Backporting commit # 407b142 to 6.6.x maintenance branch

I submitted a pull request, PR # 5844, to have the change, commit # 407b142, made by mmoayyed on Feb 24, 2023 also made in the 6.6.x branch.  The automated system keeps blindly rejecting the PR because of its insistence of including unit tests it seems.  Such tests were never provided in the original commit to the master branch so I am not sure what I can provide in that regard.

I have tried adding comments on the pull request to get someone to take notice but have not received a response after a few days and so I am thinking no one is actually seeing them since the PR keeps getting automatically closed.  I am hoping that someone with authority to merge the PR will see this, take a look and merge the request.

The use of memcached and KRYO transcoding on the 6.6.x branch will remain broken until this PR has been merged.

Please, whoever has the ability, take a look.  If there is something I can do to help this process let me know but I feel like all I am doing with the PR is what should have been done in the original commit to the master branch.
