I notice that my ~/.cache/mozilla/firefox folder is over 1 Gb. in size and uses a large part of the time needed to backup my system. Not a big deal if I am working locally but significant through a remote connection. Is this folder 'critical' in an overall backup of my HOME material?

No, there's likely no need to back that up. The contents of ~/.cache are *generally* safe to remove when they are not in use, though possibly at the expense of some performance until it gets repopulated. Certainly in a backup restoration I would not consider those essential.
