I am inviting you to join a new working group to research and build a
home Internet server.
What is a home Internet server? In the days before the Internet some
of us had nodes on Usenet. I had a small engineering workstation with
a modem and I could send mail and files around the world. Once the
Internet started up, I was able to get a DSL line and found an ISP that
would give me a static IP at a reasonable price. Now I had my own home
Internet server. Over the years I have upgraded hardware and software
and I have run different services including web servers, ntp servers,
and email servers.
Recently I discovered the home lab people, mostly on youtube, doing
everything I have done and more. If you follow these people you can learn
much about Linux, virtualization, networking, and many applications such
as NextCloud and home automation systems.
I realized that I wanted to take advantage of of the work these people
have done and build a home Internet server appliance that can be easily
duplicated, not hand crafted each time. And I realized that many other
people would like to have control over their own Internet services.
If you want a home Internet server, then this project is for you.
In the first few meetings we will investigate the project socpe,
administrative issues, and the technical level of the interested members.
Your input is very welcome.
The initial schedule is to meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each
month from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm pacific time on zoom:
