In July Professor Bridget Griffen-Foley will be in Perth/Borloo as a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies at UWA, and in her capacity as a lead researcher on a project with the National Archives of Australia.  With colleagues at Murdoch University, where Bridget is an Adjunct Professor,
and in collaboration with the Forrest Research Foundation, we are excited to hear about her work on the ABC in WA, and also her thoughts on Doing Media History. The latter will be a masterclass open to media researchers interested in media history, designed to build capacity in WA for more work in this area.

NB: Participants are asked to submit a paragraph about their current research project when registering for the masterclass and encouraged to bring examples of their own research challenges to discuss on the day.

ABSTRACT:  Join Professor Bridget Griffen-Foley for an engaging exploration of the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s unique history in Western Australia. Discover how the state’s time difference from the east coast shaped local content, innovative programming and memorable broadcasts with a focus on radio and television from the 1930s to the 1980s. The talk will spotlight local broadcasting identities including Basil Kirke and Catherine King, along with popular programs such as Kindergarten of the Air and This Day Tonight. Don’t miss your chance to learn about the communities these shows created and the responses they elicited from Western Australian audiences.
