Dear colleagues,
ANZCA and JERAA are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2022 Anne Dunn Scholar award is Professor Elizabeth (Libby) Lester, Director of the Institute for Social Change and Professor of Journalism, Media and Communications in the College of Arts, Law and Education at the University of Tasmania.
The judges noted that Professor Lester, who spent 15 years as a journalist including as the Sunday Age’s first environmental reporter, has since produced an impressive body of scholarship in journalism and communication, with a critical environmental communication focus.
She has held four Australian Research Council Discovery grants and has produced 21 book chapters, 46 journal articles and authored, co-authored and/or co-edited seven books, including Global Trade and Mediatised Environmental Protest: The View From Here (Palgrave Macmillan 2019), Environmental Pollution and the Media: Political Discourses of Risk and Responsibility in Australia, China and Japan (Routledge 2017), and the Media and environment: conflict, politics and the news (Polity, 2010). She is highly cited in this field, and held in great academic esteem, as indicated by her recent appointment as a UNESCO Chair in in Communication, Environment and Heritage.
Prof. Lester has also had significant impact on research and policy for the public good, leading The Tasmania Project, a cross-University initiative with 120 researchers that provides useful, evidence-based and timely information about Tasmanian communities to inform social, cultural and economic decision-making by government, industry and community groups as well as effective media coverage of public policy issues. Importantly Lester has been a mentor to many young academics, including the 20 PhD students who she supervised to completion, many of whom have returned to work in senior media industry or community sector roles.
The judges also commended Dr Heather Anderson, from Griffith University, for her broadcast research and practice in the public interest with a strong social justice agenda and outcomes.
The Anne Dunn Scholar award commemorates the life and work of a much-valued colleague – the late Professor Anne Dunn, of the University of Sydney. The $3000 award is jointly supported by the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia (JERAA), the Australian and New Zealand Communication Association (ANZCA), and Anne’s siblings and mother. It recognises excellence in research about the fields of communications or journalism, including but not limited to broadcast media for the public benefit.
Kind regards,
Fiona
Dear colleagues,
JERAA and ANZCA are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2022 Anne Dunn Scholar award is Professor Elizabeth (Libby) Lester, Director of the Institute for Social Change and Professor of Journalism, Media and Communications in the College of Arts, Law and Education at the University of Tasmania.
Thank you to everyone for their congratulations. This is such a special award for me. Anne provided a role model to follow when I first made the jump from industry to universities. I don’t need to tell many of you how challenging that could be. Anne showed the way.
Very honoured also to be there with Heather. As for T.J.’s DECRA, a great cause for celebrations.
Thank you to ANZCA, JERAA and Anne’s family, and hope to catch up with you later in the year.
Libby
