Dear Crosstowners,

We all experience life as a series of lessons. Benefiting from them, rather than suffering from them is profoundly important. I re-learned that in these past couple of weeks as I deal with hospitals, nursing homes, class action suits re cars, dog care...you name it. All about making sure Tannen comes out of this "unintended and almost deadly acceleration" in his usual optimistic, creative, active condition.
We have all heard about the nursing shortage that existed before the pandemic and got worse. One of the workarounds has been agency nursing, which means nurses who are contracted to make up for missing staff. That has cultural and patient care implications that have to be handled more delicately than I for one might be inclined to do. But I am working hard at it.
On our show, this week at noon on Friday on WBOK 1230 AM is Ecoee Rooney, President of the Louisiana State Nurses Association. She confirms my instincts about the challenges nurses and nursing aides and all levels above and below are dealing with. It takes enormous patience to deal with staff whose facial expression when you greet them at the desk says "whadda you want" as if you are just bothering them. But patience is the only way, I keep telling myself. There is always someone around that treats you like a human being. You just have to find that person.
Thankfully, as I have been reflecting in many of the last few letters and show content, we are back in festival season, which helps us remember why we live in what Tannen has always called "The Little Difficult". It was Art Neville who coined the phrase "The Big Easy". As we all know, not so much. BUT....here comes the Fall Treme Festival that invites us all to enjoy the unique, celebratory culture of what may be one of the most important neighborhoods in the world.
Janelle Varnado, a native New Orleanian based in Houston for now, will be on to talk both about the festival, and her "Hot Buttered Soul" marketing company. A CANO alum, I am proud to present her as the founder and CEO of her own company, using all of the newest strategies and technology for helping start-ups and all clients achieve the recognition they deserve. She has a great, infectious spirit. You will enjoy hearing from her. Later in the month, we will also invite some of the Festival's performers to visit as well.
