Dear Crosstowners,

What is usually an uneventful last official week of the summer...unless there is a hurricane of course... was this year a peculiar week with a family car accident in my case, when a car decided to take off on its own, ending crashed against a live oak tree. Not a fatality, but very scary, and with a couple of knee fractures to deal with.

It was also the week we lost former Mayor of New Orleans Moon Landrieu, an exceptional man who helped New Orleans negotiate the end of segregation, put the city on a modernization track, then followed that as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and ultimately as Chief Justice of the Louisiana 4th Supreme Court. He was, as we say now, intentional, brave, and raised, with his super-wife Verna Landrieu, nine children, most of whom have also served the public. He was kind-hearted but tough. Listen to an interview I did with him some time ago that I am rebroadcasting this Friday at noon on WBOK1230AM. You will hear why I hold him so high.

Just now as I write I heard that Queen Elizabeth has also passed. Seems she might have felt the United Kingdom is in good hands with the new Prime Minister Mary Elizabeth Truss, and she could leave the stage to her.

Another transition to report: Erin Antonak, the new curator at the Contemporary Arts Center is on board, and I invite you to the first exhibition she is presenting, an artists' call from the Gulf Coast called "Remember Earth". It is an impressive expression of the concern so many artists have for our climate-endangered planet. It is open now, so make a point of checking it out. And stay aware of the new shows she will be presenting. With Native American roots and a former tour of duty in New Orleans, she is well prepared for shedding new light on our diverse and layered city, originally named Bulbancha by the Chitimacha Native Americans who denoted this city as "a land of many tongues". So our diversity predates the arrival of Europeans and Africans as many tribes and nations met to trade and share cultures here on the banks of the Mississippi as we continue to do today.

Now, I am just waiting for that first September cool front...

“The environmental crisis is a cultural challenge,” said Antonak. “How citizens of the world collectively respond will set the course for our and our children's lifetimes. There is an urgency for new directions as the Earth's temperatures rise, an imperative that we shift from our course both locally and globally.  Artists engaged in conversation with activists, policymakers; and impacted communities can educate, advocate, and provoke dialogue. Art has an ability to connect with people on a personal level and inspire action.”

"Sadly, the Gulf Region is ground zero for so many of the effects of the climate crisis,” said George Scheer, CAC Executive Director. “The CAC's continued effort to highlight the artistic voices of this place marks the beginning of a year-long exploration of environmental themes."
