Dear Crosstowners,

One of the city's most informed health practitioners, Dr. Chip Lavie, joins us this Friday at noon on WBOK 1230 AM to call our attention to the importance of not ignoring those little "smoke signals" from our bodies, that, you know, indicate there may be a fire somewhere.

I asked him to come on because I recently had some of those signals... fatigue, a vague sense that something wasn't right. I made an appointment. His examination indicated more "smoke signals". He ordered a test that revealed an aortic valve that was closing up and needed to be replaced. That is not a small deal. Without the replacement, Dr. Ramie, who is one of the leaders in how to do the replacement without open heart surgery, told me I might not have made it past two more years on earth without fixing it.

So, yet another lesson of life.... don't ignore what your body is trying to tell you. Dr. Lavie has some other suggestions you will benefit from.

Then Naydja Bynum, and Alonzo Knox bring us cheer and culture from this year's Tremé Fall Festival on October 22nd and October 23rd. For the first time the festival is honoring a cultural and legendary family of Tremé, the James and Troy Andrews Family. This new honoring is part of the festival's intention to highlight the history and continuing importance of the neighborhood's culture. There are other firsts: a parade beginning at 10:00 a.m. on the 22nd at Robertson and Esplanade, offering an explosion of the different forms of culture in the area, including second line clubs, baby dolls, and marching bands. There's much more including crafts from area vendors, food from the famed Tremé culinary legends such as Li'l Dizzy's, and one of my favorites: a Kids Tent where youngsters can learn how to make decorative umbrellas, and coconuts and how to continue the tradition of Second lining.

And still more; new posters, a Jazz Mass at 11 AM on Sunday at St. Augustine, and the great line up of performers: James Andrews and the Crescent Allstars with Naydja Cole, Sunpie & The Louisiana Sunspots, Andrews Family Brass Brand, Lil Freddie King, Erica Falls, and The New Orleans Groovemasters featuring Herlin Riley, Shannon Powell, and Jason Marsalis.

It's a great time for area culture bearers and vendors to build their careers and businesses. But more simply put it is all things Tremé to remind residents and visitors alike how rich and celebratory the culture of the neighborhood is. This is all being presented against the backdrop of the historic and beautiful architecture of one of the nation's oldest neighborhoods. And, parking is easy at the lot at Esplanade and Henriette DeLisle.

Attend the Patron Party on Thursday, October 13th, at the Jazz Museum from 6-9 pm to help contribute to the reconstruction of the St. Augustine Catholic Church, damaged in hurricane Ida. We can all do our share of enjoying the culture and helping to benefit it as well.

Music and Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda | Book by Quiara Alegría Hudes
Conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda
October 7-16, 2022

Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30pm | Sundays at 2:00pm
Jefferson Performing Arts Center | 6400 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA

In the Heights is a Tony-Award winning musical with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) and a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes. The story is set over the course of three days, involving characters in the largely Dominican American neighborhood of Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan, New York City.

In the Heights centers on Usnavi, a bodega owner who looks after the aging Cuban lady next door while trying to woo the gorgeous woman working in the neighboring beauty salon, all the while dreaming of winning the lottery and returning to his native Dominican Republic.  When his childhood friend Nina returns to the neighborhood after her first year at college with surprising news, the close-knit residents can feel the changes coming to their community.
This revolutionary and celebratory new musical combines Latin rhythms and dance with hip-hop lyrics to tell a captivating story about what it means to chase your dreams as you cling to your roots.
