Course: Animal-Plant Interactions

Students will travel South Africa for 3 weeks while learning about plant anatomy; plant ecology; plant-animal coevolution; animal nutrition & self-medication; the role animals play in plant pollination & dispersion; and plant defenses and how animals overcome these defenses and even exploit them. The format of the course includes individual and group participation, hands-on activities, practice with various research methods, lectures, readings, and written and practical assignments. The course will begin with lectures, orientation, bush skills training, tutorials, and fieldwork at Loskop Dam Nature Reserve. We will then visit Leshiba Wilderness Reserve for fieldwork and lectures. Students will then experience the scenic Panorama Route drive before overnighting at Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, the largest green canyon in the world. Next, we will spend six nights in the remote wilderness of Makuleke Contractual Park, inside the very northern tip of Kruger National Park. We will stay at the EcoTraining Makuleke Camp, where students will be trained in field skills by some of the best field guide instructors in southern Africa.
