We are looking for reliable and motivated volunteers to join in on a study on the costs and benefits of sociality with respect to health in Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus). The project aims at disentangling the interplay between social interactions, stress and gastrointestinal parasites in a semi free ranging population of Barbary macaques at the Affenberg Salem in Southwest Germany.
The study will be conducted from the 1st of June to the 30th of November 2014. For the project you will collect observational data on social behaviours (affiliative and aggressive) as well as spatial distribution and activities of the animals and help with non-invasive faecal sample collection after learning behavioural observation protocols and monkey IDs. Applicants should have a strong interest in behavioural biology, primatology or related fields and previous experience in behavioural observation, not necessarily with primates, will be advantageous. You should also be prepared for long field days, (also under bad weather conditions), open-minded and willing to work closely together in a team. (Speaking German and having a driver’s license will be an advantage, but is not required).
At the moment, we cannot provide funding for field assistants, but a shared flat close to the study site has been organized and the rent will be covered for assistants.
