Students and faculty in the training area of Animal Behavior and Comparative Psychology conduct research to understand the functions and mechanisms of cognition and behavior in animals, including humans. Working within an evolutionary and comparative framework, we seek to understand the ultimate and proximate bases of behavioral diversity, cognitive complexity, and communication and recognition systems in animals from varied taxonomic groups, with diverse sensory modalities, within different social and ecological frameworks. Our faculty study birdsong development, avian brood parasitism, biacoustics, predator-prey interactions, and other current topics in comparative cognition and animal behavioral ecology.
