Call for applications for the position of assistant professor at the Department of Cognitive and Information Sciences, Chiba University.
The Department of Cognitive and Information Sciences at Chiba University, Japan, is inviting applicants for the tenured (*1) position of assistant professor of cognitive science, to commence on 1st April, 2016 or as early as possible from this date. As the successful candidate will be required to provide cognitive science classes and seminars in English, the candidates will have a native or near-native command of English. The candidate will also have a Ph.D. degree, or be expected to obtain one, by the date of the appointment. The department provides an established research environment for comparative cognitive study using avian species (particularly pigeons) and, with the support of Associate Professor Tomokazu Ushitani, the successful candidate will commence research from the date of the appointment. The department seeks candidates who are able to teach cognitive science from the view of species comparison and/or animal evolution. The department also welcomes applications from candidates specializing in closely-related research areas of comparative cognition, such as comparative psychology, experimental analysis of behaviour, or neuroethology.
*1 The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be promoted to associate professor subject to achievements in education and research from the date of the appointment.
About Chiba University and Chiba city: Including its predecessors, Chiba University has a 140-year history and is one of the largest national universities in Japan. Consisting of 9 undergraduate faculties and 11 graduate schools, 2,970 staff provide an excellent academic environment to 11,109 undergraduate and 3,580 postgraduate students (as of 1st May, 2014). The main campus of Chiba University is located in the suburb of Chiba, which can be accessed in about 40 minutes from the centre of Tokyo, and 50 minutes from Tokyo International Airport, by train. Chiba is a moderately-sized, relaxed, safe and cosmopolitan city.
Duties: The successful candidate will be required to give on average 2 lecture and 2 seminar classes per week. Mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students will also form part of the duties. The successful candidate will be required to attend faculty and departmental meetings once a month and to contribute to work related to entrance examinations. Salary: The salary will be determined according to the standard salary scale adopted by national universities or, as an alternative, the successful candidate can select an annual salary system in which the salary is determined in consideration of academic achievement and/or contribution to the university.
