Description:
I am looking for a long-term field assistant who will also act as a
field manager for an ongoing project on chacma baboon social behavior,
stress and reproductive physiology in Cape Town, South Africa. Primary
responsibilities will be the collection of
behavioral and demographic data, monitoring of group movements and
human-baboon interactions, collection and processing of samples for
hormonal analyses, data entry/management, oversight of short-term
volunteer field assistants, and regular communication with
PI. This is an ideal position for someone who wants to gain additional
field experience in preparation for a graduate program in animal
behavior, biological anthropology, or related fields.
Minimum qualifications:
- good physical condition
- comfortable with living away from family and friends
- excellent attention to detail
- excellent social and communication skills
- reliable and highly motivated
- able to work independently and as part of a team
- drivers license
Preferred qualifications:
- experience with coordinating team activities, leadership skills
- experience with scientific projects and field work (any context)
- some prior lab experience useful (pipetting)
Salary/Funding:
Accommodation and living expenses will be covered by the
project, pending successful completion of an initial training period
(4-6 weeks). Airfare will be refunded upon completion of the commitment
period.
Term of appointment:
Starting in June/July, for one or two years.
