Job Title: California Condor Nest Technician (Full-Time, Regular)

Schedule: Monday-Friday, including occasional evenings, weekends and holidays for fieldwork, special events and annual events.

Description:  Under general direction of the Conservation and Research Associate, the California Condor Nest Technician is responsible for assisting the Santa Barbara Zoo and United States Fish and Wildlife Service with tracking and observing breeding and nesting condors, collecting quantitative behavioral data in accordance with established protocols, training nest monitoring volunteers, supervising volunteer and biological intern data collection efforts in regard to data quality and consistency, and entering, managing, and reporting data.

Requirements: Four-year college degree in biology or related field with an understanding of behavioral research and data collection. The qualified applicant must have a strong work ethic and an ability to work both independently and as a part of a dynamic team, have excellent communication and organizational skills, excellent interpersonal, training and coaching skills, demonstrated effective problem solving ability, good scientific writing skills and attention to detail. Must have applicable research and analysis skills, and scientific writing and presentation experience. A valid driver’s license with good driving record, as well as the ability to complete an ATV safety course and obtain Wilderness First Aid & CPR Certification, are essential. Must be comfortable with off-road driving, with the ability to access and negotiate all areas of the facility and in the field. Must have the ability to conduct fieldwork in rough terrain and thick vegetation, to hike up to six (6) miles on rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, and camp (sometimes alone) in remote areas for up to one (1) week as well as the ability to backpack and lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds.

Desirable qualifications: Animal handling experience; familiarity with the California Condor Recovery Program; experience with behavioral data collection; experience with Microsoft Access. While not required, candidates with previous experience with rappelling and ascent of ropes in a high angle environment are preferred.

Compensation: $14-15.40/hour, DOE
